The national launch of the ‘Traditional Buildings on Irish Farms’ booklet took place in the Donegal County Museum, Letterkenny, County Donegal on Friday, June 20, 2008. The booklet, which highlights the significance of built heritage on farms, was launched by F.H.A. Aalen, Professor of Geography (Emeritus), Trinity College, Dublin and co-author of ‘Atlas of the Irish Rural Landscape’. The publication was a joint initiative of The Heritage Council and Teagasc and outlines the significance of farm heritage, rural settlement patterns, farmyard layouts, the variety of farm buildings and advice on their conservation.
In conjunction with The Heritage Council and Teagasc, the County Donegal Heritage Office, Cultural Services, Donegal County Council was pleased to host the national launch of the ‘Traditional Buildings on Irish Farms’ booklet. Traditional farm buildings lend character to our cultural landscape and contribute to the variety of our built heritage. County Donegal’s farmsteads include a variety of traditional farm buildings. On large farms in the east of the county, an array of farm buildings can be found arranged around a courtyard whereas on small farms in the west of the county, outbuildings may be added to the farmhouse along its long axis producing an extended farmstead or may be distributed in a scattered pattern around the farmhouse.
